Do ice baths help with recovery, increase metabolism, and burn brown fat?
Ice baths are all the rage in the fitness industry right now, unfortunately the claims that are being associated with them are bro science and not backed up by evidence. Ice baths CAN affect perceived recovery and soreness for athletes doing high volume training. That is about the extent of it though. Ice baths do not meaningfully increase your daily calorie burn (study on this showed ~24 calories a day). They do not meaningfully improve recovery from injury, performance, energy, sleep or visceral fat. The ice bath craze should be used as a case study in correlation vs causation. People that start doing them often also made other meaningful lifestyle changes at the same time, but giving credit to healthier diet, exercise and sleep is not as sexy as selling a 500$ ice bath tub that is a quick fix. They are also not entirely harmless, shocking your body into effectively feeling like you are having a near death experience spikes adrenaline and cortisol as well as causing an increase in blood pressure at the same time as the cold causes vasoconstriction. This is a set up that is not ideal for the cardiovascular system and if you have a pre existing heart condition you should speak with your doctor before doing ice baths if you are determined to continue doing them.
