Herniated Disc Treatment Denver
Your MRI Isn’t the Whole Story
A herniated disc diagnosis can feel like a verdict. Patients leave imaging appointments with words like "bulge," "protrusion," and "nerve compression" rattling around in their heads — and often a deep fear that their spine is fragile, damaged, or broken. At Get Back Physical Therapy in Denver, we want you to know something important: disc findings on MRI are extremely common in people with no pain whatsoever, and a herniated disc is very often a highly treatable condition that responds well to the right rehabilitation approach.
What is a Herniated Disc?
The discs between your vertebrae act as shock absorbers for the spine. When the outer layer of a disc is stressed or damaged, the inner material can push outward — a herniation. Depending on the direction and size of the herniation, it may or may not compress a nearby nerve, which can produce local pain, referred pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs.
What's important to understand is that disc herniations frequently resolve on their own over time, and that the severity of imaging findings often doesn't correlate with the severity of symptoms. Many people with large herniations have minimal pain. Many people with significant pain have minor findings. The tissue tells only part of the story — and treating the imaging report rather than the person in front of you is one of the most common mistakes in spine care.
Common presentations we work with include:
Acute disc herniation with local back or neck pain
Disc herniation with arm or leg nerve symptoms
Chronic disc-related pain that hasn't resolved with rest
Post-imaging anxiety and fear-avoidance around movement
Disc herniation in active adults, athletes, and lifters
How We Treat Herniated Discs at Get Back PT
Our approach begins with a thorough clinical assessment that goes well beyond what imaging can show. We evaluate how you're moving, what aggravates and relieves your symptoms, and what's keeping your nervous system in a heightened state of alert. From there we build a rehabilitation plan that is progressive, evidence-based, and grounded in helping you regain trust in your body.
Your treatment plan may include:
Directional preference assessment to identify which movements reduce your symptoms and which positions provide relief
Pain neuroscience education to address the fear and catastrophizing that often accompany a disc diagnosis and slow recovery
Manual therapy to reduce pain, improve segmental mobility, and prepare the spine for active loading
Progressive spinal loading that gradually reintroduces the movements and positions that have become painful or avoided
Core and hip strengthening to build the support system your spine needs for long-term resilience
Return to full activity programming including lifting, running, and sport-specific movements
Why Choose Get Back PT for Herniated Disc Treatment in Denver?
We are a cash-pay practice, which means your treatment plan is determined by your clinician — not by an insurance company's protocol. Herniated disc rehabilitation often requires a longer, more nuanced approach than a standard PT episode, and we have the flexibility to provide that without cutting corners when your authorized visits run out.
We also take the psychological component of disc injuries seriously. The nocebo effect — harm caused by negative expectations after a scary diagnosis — is real and well-documented in back pain research. Part of our job is helping you reframe what your diagnosis actually means and rebuilding the confidence to move freely again. Many clients who arrive convinced they need surgery leave with a very different understanding of what's possible through progressive rehabilitation.
Ready to Move Past Your Disc Diagnosis?
If you've been diagnosed with a herniated disc in Denver and want care that looks beyond the imaging report, we're here to help. Get Back Physical Therapy is accepting new patients now — no referral required.
A herniated disc doesn't have to define your activity level or your life. Let's build a plan to prove that.
