How do I get more toned muscles?

How do I get more toned muscles?

A common question we get as trainers is how do I get more toned? I want to address the premise of the question and give concrete answers that give actionable pathways towards that goal. So first, what do we mean by toned? When I hear that I assume someone is saying they want their muscles to look more visible. Here’s the issue with this question: every muscle on your body is toned. The only variables you can affect are how big they are and how much fat tissue/water your body holds over them. As far as water goes, walking around dehydrated all the time to look more toned is unreasonable and not recommended. So let’s talk about the other two.

To get toned:

  1. Grow muscle

  2. Lose fat

That’s it, that’s the list. A larger muscle with less, or even the same amount of fat on top of it, will look more toned. The same size muscle with less fat will look more toned, and actually look larger. It might sound simple, but that’s how.
